I’m just starting to catch my breath after a busy period. Media Lab Toronto was involved in three separate installations during TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) in September. A long overdue recap:

For a Royal Bank RBC VIP event we provided SMS/Twitter projection pieces for before an invite only screening at the wonderful Winter Gardens theatre. Then at the event after party we debuted a fun new photo wall. The piece took a near-live stream of the portraits that Rannie Turingan was shooting as guests arrived and displayed them in a fun, polaroid themed projection above the stage in the club.

TIFF also saw a renewed version of the TXTris Twitter piece on show in the VIP lounge at Vitamin Water’s exclusive backyard party spot in the ultra-spiffy Yorkville neighbourhood. Such luminaries as Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman attended parties in the space unfortunately it’s not known whether they liked the installation or not.

Lastly I was very pleased to assist Ana Serrano and Galen Scorer with a custom designed interactive piece What’s Your Essential Cinema? This was projected at huge scale in the atrium of the brand new TIFF Bell Lightbox HQ of the festival. It allowed visitors to vote for their pick from a curated list of 100 essential movies. The piece reconfigured, swirled in 3D space and played HD clips of movies as the votes came in. My part in this was creating the SMS voting system and it was a fun one to work on.
